1950s: Fly-de-High! Butlin’s from above

The Butlin’s Ocean Hotel, Saltdean in all its 1950s heyday splendour! Here the Ocean is captured from an ‘eye in the sky’ by Aero Pictorial. Note there are no buildings on Withyham Avenue, Longridge Avenue (corner) and Nutley Avenue to the back of the complex. Billy Butlin bought the hotel in 1953. It looks like there was little else to purchase around there in those days!

Butlin’s is celebrating its 80th birthday this year. If you have any memories or pictures of your stay; or have visited or worked at the Brighton Butlin’s Ocean Hotel in Saltdean, then please get in touch. Contributions from any year from the 1930s to the 1990s are particularly welcome.

For magnifying, either hover over the image (PC) or zoom in (tablet /phone), depending on your device. If you look closely you can see people enjoying the roof terraces!

Back in the 60’s I worked as a travelling stock taker for Butlins. One year I was assigned a rota comprising this hotel, the Metropole in Blackpool and a third week which could be anywhere from the Heads of Ayr to Ingoldmells to the George at Criccieth. Never made it up the tower though 🙁
Despite the “attractions” we had an overwhelming desire to get out of each site as quickly as possible and avoid “change over” day at all costs.
